Playground For Christmas
Children at the Ferndale School for Intellectually Handicapped Children have been given a handsome collective Christmas present some new playground equipment —by the Naval Air Transport Wing detachment at Christchurch Airport.
On Monday members of the detachment were at the school in Merivale Lane constructing the outdoor gym set, which arrived in Christchurch from the United States on Sunday. Soon after completion the equipment was being used by a small army of delighted children. The idea of doing something for the children for Christmas came from two enlisted men in the detachment. At first it was planned to give each a present and a combined party. But after further consideration with the headmis-
tress (Mrs M. F. Wilby) the playground equipment was chosen. Last week calls were made to the detachment’s home base at Moffett Field, California. The equipment was purchased packed and flown out for delivery to the school on Monday. Mrs Wilby said she thought it was a wonderful gesture for the Americans to have thought of the school. On Monday morning, by way of an extra treat, the children were taken to the Navy base where they were entertained, shown a film about the Antarctic, and shown over a Cl3O Hercules.
