Parking Building Above Bus Barn
The Christchurch Transport Board decided yesterday to go ahead immediately with plans to erect a parking building above the bus barn in Cathedral square.
The Christchurch City Council will be invited to prepare a joint design for the development of sketch plans and an estimate of cost for submission to the Local Authorities Loans Board for loan approval. The board's works and traffic committee said the council had notified its reaffirmat ion of approval in principle of the board's proposal, subject to Local Authorities Loans Board approval. The council’s commitment to the board would be limited to £12,000 for architects’ fees so far incurred, and full settlement for the council taking title of the land in Hereford place which the board bought to accommodate the “down" ramp.
Other conditions were that allocation for the board’s off street parking be agreed later.
the council assume full responsibility for the future design and development of the parking building with either the council's architect, or the board’s architect being engaged on the plans and working drawings, that the board provide amenities for its staff on top of the building and meet all costs of this, and that part of Customs lane be closed.
It was considered the project should be a jointly designed one to make allowances for connexion between the parking building and the office tower, the report said.
The board’s need for new office accommodation and staff amenities was urgent. The design study would need much investigation and preliminary work which, if started now, would enable the board to go ahead with its section of the project
