TOTARA LAD EASY WESTLAND WINNER

(From Our Own Reporter)

GREYMOUTH.

The double on the second day of the Westland Racing Club’s summer meeting was won by Totara Lad and Glenmist. They paid £l3 12s 6d for £l.

Totara Lad had run second to Ursinus the first day, and Glenmist won over a shorter distance on Saturday.

The on-course double, won by the very hot favourite, Doraldo, in the Whataroa Stakes, and Dowmanca in the Woodstock Hack Handicap, paid £lO 7s for £l. The meeting was held In fine warm weather. There was a fair attendance. On-course investments totalled £10,592 10s, compared with £10,496 for the second day last year. Totara Lad proved much too good for the opposition in the Westland County Handicap. He followed the pace-maker. Taxman, all the way to the straight entrance and then came away to win easily by three lengths from Clipper. The latter’s performance was impressive as he was near the rear of the field with five furlongs to run, even with this ground to make up and having to go round the others, he heat the rest almost as easily as the winner beat him. Taxman weakened in the run home to be two and a half lengths back in third place. The favourite, Vivien Robe, raced with Totara Lad until rounding the home bend where she started to weaken a little. However she held on for fourth ahead of Scribbler, Deladana and Silver Shell. Glenmist won the Lake Mahinapua Hack Handicap handily. Pygmaios was the early leader from Patrician, but the field was fairly well bunched passing the stand. Gong down the back the order was Pygmaios, Patrician, Dark Chick, and Slantre, with Glenmist and Banerva four or five lengths back. Glenmist started to improve round the home bend but still trailed Patrician, Pygmaios and Dark Chick.

Glenmist gradually forged ahead to beat Slantre, which

finished strongly, by three-i quarters of a length. Dark Chick was a length and a half

away third, with a neck to Pygmaios. Banerva and PatIrician followed.
