APPEAL FOR SUPPORT
Maori Theatre Production
(N Z. Press Association)
WELLINGTON, Nov. 21
Unless private sponsorship was forthcoming, the Maori Theatre Trust may have to shelve the plans it had for presenting the Bruce Mason play “Awatea” on a tour of New Zealand next year.
The trust chairman (Mr P. Keiha) said today that the trust had been forced to start seeking financial backing from private firms and individuals as the result of being rejected for a grant by the Queen Elizabeth II Arts Council. An application had been made for £9200, which would have covered preparation and production costs up to the first staging of the play in Gisborne on March 1. Last week, the council’s drama committee recommended the application be declined. The committee also said that, in view of the council’s substantial commitments for 1967. any guarantee against a loss of £9200 should not be considered. Mr Keiha said the trust was confident the play would attract public support and that it would make a profit.
