“Girl Carried Off”

(New Zealand Press Association(

AUCKLAND, Nov. 21.

A 10-year-old boy, who had taken his four-year-old niece for a ramble in Port Erin Park, started a wide search yesterday when he returned breathless and sobbing. He said a tail man in a dark suit had carried the girl off. After a quick search of nearby streets, relatives called the Ponsonby police. Within minutes, police cars converged on the area. Descriptions of the man and missing child were announced on the Auckland taxi radio networks and police on motor-cycles searched the streets.

Then a married couple walked into the Ponsonby Police Station, leading the missing child by the hand. They reported having taken the child from the boy for protective reasons. Under questioning, the boy admitted having behaved like a heavy unr’c. When his little nie.e refused to go home, lie had pushed her over, sat on her chest and stopped her screams by ramming his handkerchief into her mouth. At this stage, the tall man in the dark suit had intervened, with laudable intentions.
