The new “Miss World,” Miss Reita Faria, of India, is delaying her wedding and medical examinations to enjoy the opportunities of her title.
The 23-year-old medical student from Bombay said her sudden change of plan was entirely her own decision.
“I want to continue as “Miss W'orld’ because of the opportunity it gives me to see places—a chance I shall probably never have again,” she said. Miss Faria, who won the title from 60 other contenders, said within minutes of her
victory last Thursday that she would return to her studies immediately. She has said that she intends to pass her final examinations to qualify as a gynaecologist before marrying a 28-year-old tea planter, Osborne Cobo, next June. Since then, however, she has said she plans to fly home shortly for a family conference on how to spend the coming year, and hopes to be able to have her final examinations postponed. Her fiance had already cabled her saying he was overjoyed at her victory and telling her to enjoy herself, she said. Miss Faria has continued to resist film offers. .“I don’t see myself as an actress, and anyway I am determined to become a doctor,” she said.
