(N.Z. Press Association)
HAWERA, Nov. 21
A 17-year-old Manaia girl, who made her first solo flight only one week ago, won the regional section of the Newman Trophy competition for women pilots at the Royal New Zealand Aero Club’s championships held at Waipukurau on Saturday.
She is Gloria Ogilwy, an office clerk, of Normanby road, Manaia. With five hours of dual flying experience, she had not flown solo except for five minutes last week. One of seven members of the Hawera Aero Club’s team which took part in the championships, Miss Ogilwy said: “I was a bit nervous when I was competing against three other more experienced women, one of whom was a private pilot. I just went in it for the experience and couldn’t believe it when they told me I had won.”
Miss Ogilwy will compete in the final of the Newman Trophy contest at the official opening of New Plymouth Airport in March.
Founders’ Society Meets.— When the Canterbury branch of the Founders’ Society met recently a programme was presented by Mr B. Demicheli and his musical group. Choral items, songs in character and humorous recitations were included. Mr Demicheli also played old-time favourites on the piano.
