MAGISTRATE’S COURT Robbed Of £29 After Being Taken To Party

The accused had admitted to the police that he had intended to “roil” the complainant for money. Detective Sergeant D. Porteous told Mr H. J. Evans, S.M., in the Magistrate’s Court yesterday when Taupere Heke, aged 22, unemployed, pleaded guilty to a charge of stealing £29 from Leslie George Whitehead on November 15.

Mr S. G. Erber appeared for Heke, who was remanded in custody to November 28 for sentence.

Detective-Sergeant Porteous said that Heke and some others had picked up Whitehead in Cathedral square on November 15 and invited him to a party. About 10.30 p.m, at the party house, the complainant was invited to another part of the house by Heke. He entered a darkened room and was pushed on to a bed where £29 was taken from his pocket. The complainant was intoxicated, said Detective-Ser-geant Porteous, and he put up little resistance. He escaped through a window. SHOOTING INCIDENT

Jack Kohere, aged 30, a farmhand, pleaded guilty to a charge that on November 20 at Sheffield he was under the influence of drink or a drug to such an extent as to be incapable of proper control of a .22 calibre repeating rifle and a .22 semi automatic rifle in his charge. Kohere was convicted and remanded in custody for a probation officer’s report and sentence on November 25.

Detective-Sergeant Porteous said that on November 20 the police were called to a Sheffield home where it was believed Kohere had run amuck because of intoxication. When the police constable, after notifying the Christchurch police, went to the home Kohere was found there with a glass of beer in his hand. He was very intoxicated. He had said he had the rifles in his charge. During the incident which caused the alarm a shot had been fired through a wall of a sittingroom which faced the roadway. A drinking party had been in progress at the home, De-tective-Sergeant Porteous said. Kohere told the Magistrate the shot had been fired accidentally. He had not known the rifle was loaded. FIGHTING David Eder, aged 21, a fishmonger, and Clifford David Bowman, aged 24, a sales assistant, pleaded guilty to a joint charge of fighting in High street on November 20. Each was convicted and fined £5.

FINED £5O Arthur Piggott Williams, aged 45, a farmer (Mr G. W. Alexander) pleaded guilty to a charge that on the Picton-Chrlst-church highway near Amberley on November 20 he drove a motor truck while under the Influence of drink or a drug. He was convicted, fined £5O, and disqualified from driving for three years. Detective Sergeant Porteous said the truck which was being driven in an erratic manner and while being followed had

crossed to Its incorrect side about 20 times. ASSAULTED WOMAN

“If you commit any further offences of this nature you will find yourself in real trouble," the Magistrate said to Jack Quica Fatafehi, aged 29. a fitter and turner, when he was fined £l5 and was ordered to pay witness’s expenses of £2 on a charge of assaulting Barbara Ellen Cook on October 28. Fatafebi was appearing for sentence. Mr P. F. Tempero, who appeared for the accused, said that there was some degree of provocation. The Magistrate said to Fata fehi that late on the night of October 28 when a young woman refused to go to his flat for a few drinks he assaulted her. The accused had been before the Court on charges of disorderly behaviour, obscene language and resisting arrest but he had a satisfactory employment record. IDLE AND DISORDERLY When the police visited the Porthos at Lyttelton at 9.45 p.m. on Friday they found three women in the crew's quarters, said Detective Sergeant Porteous. They had little money and had not worked for some time.

Pier Maria Silver, aged 23, a factory hand, Noeline Theresa Hapakuku, aged 20, a domestic, and Sheryl Jennifer Baker, aged 21, a nurse aid, all pleaded guilty to charges of being idle and disorderly In that they had insufficient lawful means of support. Silver and Hapakuku were remanded in custody to November 24 for sentence and Baker was remanded in custody to November 28 for sentence. PEERED INTO WINDOW

A man, whose name was suppressed. was discharged without conviction under section 42 of the Criminal Justice Act upon payments of £5 towards the costs of prosecution and Court costs of £1 10s on a charge of being found by night without lawful excuse peering into the window of a house in Hammond place on Friday. He pleaded guilty. Sergeant F. G. Mulcare said that at 10.5 p.m. on November 18 the police were called to Hammond place where a man had been apprehended by two neighbours who had seen him looking in the window of a house. The defendant, who had been drinking, said that he had been looking for a friend. DANGEROUS DOG Charles Francis Edward Saville, a salesman, was convicted and ordered to pay costs of £1 10s and was ordered to make restitution of £8 and to keep the dog under proper control on a charge of being the owner of a vicious dog. He pleaded guilty by letter. On similar charges, Walter Craven was fined £3 10s and Derick William Under £1 10s. FINED £7 10s Whiwhi James Edwards, aged 27, a carpenter (Mr K. M. Hampton), was convicted and fined £7 10s on a charge of being on premises without lawful excuse on October 16 in South Crescent road. He pleaded not guilty. DEPORTATION RECOMMENDED Anthony Leonard Sawyer, aged 27, a wood machinist, was imprisoned for three months on two charges of false pretences, when he appeared for sentence. The terms are to run concurrently. The Magistrate said he would recommend to the Minister of Immigration that Sawyer, an Englishman, be deported after completing his sentence. Sawyer had been convicted of obtaining £33 10s by fraud in Auckland between August 4 and August 9, and obtaining £2 by false pretence at Auckland on August 11. Sergeant N. A. Galbraith said that Sawyer had admitted having previous convictions overseas. ASSAULTED WIFE Helmuth Gerd Hagen, aged 35. a factory hand, was remanded on ball until November 28 for a probation officer’s report, when he appeared for sentence on a charge of assaulting his wife, Audrey Beatrice Hagen, on October 20. Hagen had been convicted and remanded for a psychiatric report on November 3. The report indicated that no psychiatric treatment was required, said the Magistrate.
