Not Turning Professional

The leading Australian tennis player, A. D. Roche, said he would reject an offer to turn professional. Roche, holder of the French and Italian singles’ titles and, at 21, generally considered the best player for his age in the world, said the offer was for a three-year contract worth £30,000. The offer had been made by a representative of American promoter, Mr Jack Kramer. The president of the Lawn Tennis Association of Austra lia (Mr Bill Edwards) said Roche would be given permission to tour privately next year.
