SEAT BELTS NOT WORN
Fatal Road Accidents
In the last month three persons had been killed in the Canterbury area when they were thrown from cars fitted with seat belts which the occupants were not wearing, the district officer of the Transport Department (Mr D. L. Hogan) said yesterday. “The injuries these persons suffered might very well hav* not been fatal had they bee> wearing the seat belts, am thus not been thrown out v the vehicles,” Mr Hogan said “The lesson should be obvio'.-t both to drivers and passengers who travel in cars whiel are fitted with seat belts.”
Both in the city and on the open road it was commor to see persons driving o. travelling in cars without using the seat belts provided. On the credit side, the department knew of many cases where persons had been saved from death or severe injury because they wore seat belts, Mr Hogan said. “It takes only a few seconds to fasten a seat belt, and if it may mean your life, surely you can spare those few seconds,” he said.
World wide experience had proved conclusively that seat belts could save lives and prevent injuries—but only if they were worn.
