Good Response By Surgeons

(N.Z. Press Association)

WELLINGTON, No-’ -1

The Prime Minister (Mr Holyoake) said today there had been a “very fine response” to calls by the Health Department for surgical staff for the New Zealand medical team in South Vietnam. “I believe there will be a need for outside medical aid to Vietnam for many years to come,” he said. “I feel certain that the medical profession in New Zealand will respond to this challenge.” The surgeon leader-desig-nate of the team would be Dr. P. H. Eccles-Smith, of Dannevirke. Dr. J. J. Enwright, of Auckland, who had been second surgeon in the team for the last two years, had offered his services for a further term. The Prime Minister said replacements had not yet been recruited for the positions of third surgeon, anaesthetist and medical officer but a number of inquiries had been re. ceived by the Health Department and the External Affairs Department. “Nevertheless, further applications for any of these positions, which need to be filled in January, would be welcomed.”

Mr Holyoake said Miss J. A. Bird, 'of Blenheim, had been appointed to the nursing staff at Qui Nhon and would leave in January.
