RACING Hokitika Double To Ursinus-Glenmist

(From Our Own Reporter) GREYMOUTH. Ursinus, from Orari, and Glenmist, from Reefton, won the T.A.B. double on the first day of the Westland Racing Club’s summer meeting at Hokitika on Saturday. The combination paid £l3los 6d for £l.

Ursinus, a member of L. H. Pratt’s team, won the Haast Pass Handicap in style for Mr and Mrs A. G. Wigley. Glenmist, which D. H. Catbush trains for Mr R. R. Hewison, beat the hack milers in the Lake Mathieson Handicap.

The on-course double was won by Idle Chatter

and Eastburn. They paid £2O Is for £l.

The meeting was held in fine hot weather but the track was holding after rain during the week. His Host began best in the Haast Pass Handicap and made the pace from Taxman, Totara Lad, Jayess and-Ursinis with Rae’s Hope and Scribbler handy. Except that Totara

Lad had moved Into second place there was little change

in the order to the half-mile. Totara Lad moved through inside His Host to lead around the home rim. In the run home Totara Lad was headed by Ursinus, which won going away by two lengths. Rae’s Hope was four lengths away third. Jayess was two and a half lengths back fourth. Taxman, Scribbler and His Host were the next to finish.

Patrician led out in the Lake Mathison Hack Handicap. He was followed early by Luzonite, Slantre, Dark Chick, Red Treasure, Glenmist, Banerva and Eastburn. Glenmist moved into the leading group with two furlongs to run. When they straightened for the run home Red Treasure, Glenmist, Luzonite, Dark Chick and Slantre were in very close order. Red Treasure was still in charge at the furlong but Glenmist finished best to win by half a length.

Dark Chick was second and Red Treasure weakened to third. Banerva was fourth, then came Eastburn, Slantre, Luzonite and Patrician.
