Sisters Take Two Sewing Prizes

St. Mary’s College entrants in the schoolgirls’ dressmaking competition had reason for happiness. All three girls who reached the finals were among the prizewinners.

Deidre Burrows, wearing a navy blue two-piece suit, the collar and low-slung belt banded with red and white, won first prize in the 16 to 18 years section. Her sister, Benita Burrows,' in a straight navy shift topped with a teal and navy checked jacket, was placed third in the 13 to 15 years section. In the junior section, Marguerite Myers, also from St. Mary’s college, was placed second. Marguerite wore a shaped, navy coat featuring low lapels and covered buttons over an empire line matching frock with white lace bodice. The winner of the section was a country entrant, Gloria Green, from the Hawarden District High School. The

jacket of her cream suit was softly shaped, and finished with long lace cleeves and lapels. Second equal in the senior section were Robyn Mills, of Burnside High School, and Suellen Brown, of Villa Maria college. Both girls wore summer coats and teaming dresses. Robyn chose pale blue worn with an empire line floral dress, and Suellen, pink teamed with a matching croched-look frock. Ashburton College’s finalist, Raewyn Pierce, was awarded third place for her aqua coloured overblouse and skirt. From the 200 entries, 30 finalists were chosen by the judges, Mrs H. R. Cameron, lecturer for the Christchurch Teachers’ Training college secondary school home-craft course, and two teacher trainees, Mrs J. Hoskin and Miss C. Cunniffe. The contest was sponsored by the D. I. C. and Simplicity patterns and the prize for the school with the most entries, a fully automatic sewing machine, was awarded to St. Margarets’ College, which entered 64 garments.
