SCOTS IN CONTROL
Wallabies Outplayed (Special Crspdt. N.Z.PA.I HAWICK, (Scotland). The South of Scotland scored its first win over a major touring Rugbyside on Saturday by beating Australia, 13-0, at Mansfield Park, Hawick. There was no denying that on the day, the textile workers in their red and white striped jumpers were the better team. Their forwards including five internationals, were magnificent and kept Australia under constant pressure. The weakened Australian attack did well to hold them as long as they did. The formidable defence of the Scottish backs also stopped the renowned Australian backs from scoring a try. The South of Scotland’s three tries were the first they have ever registered in their three matches against Australia. They were all the result of strong back-line rushes, with the ball either in the hand or at the toe. For South of Scotland, R. Welsh, J. Turner and G. Tweedie scored tries, and J. Gray kicked two goals.
