Remarkable Swim By Miss T. Shipston

Miss T. Shipston gave an indication of the ability that won her Commonwealth Games selection when she made a brilliant effort over 220 yd butterfly in the opening swimming carnival of the season, an age group meeting at the Papanui pool on Saturday.

Her time of 2min 53.35ec was 7.lsec faster than the Canterbury men’s record and would have gained her third place on the national women’s ranking list. She is still a junior, having attained her fifteenth birthday two months ago.

It was a remarkable swim—and a unique one. It wa*s the first time a female swimmer from Canterbury had covered the distance in competition. Before this splendid swim. Miss Shipston had contested three races in different strokes in the chilly conditions and won them all.

She was the only competitor in the butterfly event, so —B. M. Mustchin offered to take a lane and accompany her. But he gave up before the finish, complaining about the toughness of the assignment.

Miss Shipston, however, was not distressed at the end—a tribute to the excellent condition she is in for the start of the season. She is in a virtual round-the-year swimming programme. On returning from Kingston she followed a light training procedure until the Centennial Pool opened; since then she has stepped up her schedule of preparatory work and is now carrying out her training at a faster clip than before.

Conspicuous Success A girl who might follow in Miss Shipston’s footsteps one day, Catherine Whiting (Wharenui). also achieved conspicuous success at the carnival. She swam a creditable medley and produced two good freestyle performances; her 100yds time of Imin 4.4 sec was outstanding for a 12-year-old. The Canterbury men’s medley champion. N. Williams (Wharenui), made a good showing in the four-stroke event and gave A. B. Kindred a good race in the 200yds freestyle, only to lose by 18in.

A performance of promise was the swim by Michelle Richardson (Wharenui) in the under-16 girls’ breaststroke. She finished 3yd behind Miss Shipston over 200 yd, convincingly beating Kathryn Harris, a provincial senior and junior champion.

The carnival attracted entries from 13 of the 16 Canterbury clubs. An unusual feature was that Sockburn Park swimmers competed only in the relay event; no other club entered a team for this race.

Good Start The president of the Canterbury Swimming Centre (Mr S. Williams) said that the meeting was the best opening carnival for five or six years. The introduction of the full-scale age group competition was "encouraging.” He attributed a number of the scratchings to the uncertainty of the weather. The number of disqualifications was greater than usua'l, but the referee (Mr J. H. Johnson) said most of them were for not touching with both hands at the end of a length in breaststroke and butterfly events. Only one swimmer was ruled out for a crooked kick.
