“The Press” In 1866

November 21 AROWHENUA.—The progress which has been taking place in this rising district is thus alluded to in a letter written by “A Traveller” to the “Timaru Herald”: A few days ago, after an absence of two years, I visited the township of Arowhenua, on the serpentine banks of the Temuka, the bridge over which has a singular appearance, one end of it having apparantly gone somewhat down the stream. I found the land for a considerable distance around not only purchased but in the highest state of cultivation, and all bespoke a numer-

ous population and a thrifty nature. Opposite the Crown hotel I noticed tombstones, and was told it was the cemetery, which surprised me, being so centrally situated. I fancy this fine open space may become most useful for a market-place, so desirable for the convenience of the large agricultural neighbourhood, where a corn exchange or market-house, public buildings, &c, may be erected, and the cemetery removed before it is more densely peopled. Apart from its commercial accommodation, it would add charm to this pleasant locality.
