Installation Of Dean Underhill
“1 assign to thee the chief place in this Cathedral Church, under that of the Bishop, and induct thee into the possession thereof, with all rights and privileges appertaining to the office of Dean in this Cathedral. Rule faithfully and with love,” said the Bishop of Christchurch (the Rt, Rev. W. A. Pyatt) to the Rev. M. L. Underhill, new Dean of Christchurch, at his formal installation In the Cathedral yesterday afternoon.
The Cathedral was nearly full for the short installation service which included the formal questioning of the Dean-elect by Bishop Pyatt; the reading of Dean Underhill's licence of appointment:
and the leading of the Dean to his official seat by the Bishop. The licence of appointment was read by the registrar of the Diocese, Mr J. C. Cottrell, and the lesson by Dr. L. C. L. Averill, senior lay canon. The intercessions were led by Dean Underhill. Among representatives of other denominations attending were the Rev. Father B. Meeking, representing the Roman Catholic Diocese of Christchurch; the Revs. L. Jones and D. Glenny. Presbyterian Church; the Revs. A. McLeod and J. North, Baptist Church; the Rev. E. Ogier, Churches of Christ; and the Rev. S. Dawson, Methodist Church. All the ministers took part in the formal procession before the service.
