Records Near For R. C. Motz
'AT the age of 26, the Canterbury cricketer, R. C. Motz, looks likely to rewrite a good many lines in the New Zealand record book.
At present, he stands tenth equal, with A. R. MacGibbon, in the list of bowling aggregates. He has taken 352 wickets, and needs 186 more to beat the New Zealand first-class record, held by R. W. Blair. But in view of his comparative youth, and the prospect of a brief tour of Australia next season, a longer one in 1969 —and others before he retires—he must be given every chance of establishing a new record.
One notable milestone will probably be reached by Motz this season. If he appears in the five Plunket Shield matches—and only injury can prevent him taking his place in the team—-
he will equal the record of 42 appearances for Canterbury in shield games set by Mac Gibbon.
But it may take Motz this season, and next, to overtake two figures set by T. B. Burtt. Motz needs to bowl 432.3 more overs in shield cricket to be the mostworked Canterbury bowler in these matches, and he needs 34 wickets to beat Burtt’s Canterbury record.
