COLOUR OF GEMSTONES
“We have been more successful in recent years in determining the colour of gemstones,” said Dr. D. R. Hutton, of the physics department of the University of Canterbury at the annual meeting of the mathematics and physics section of the Canterbury branch of the Royal Society of New Zealand.
Dr. Hutton was speaking on “The Colours of Quartz Minerals” at the science block of the University of Canterbury at Ham. Dr. Hutton, whd has made studies of quartz minerals using micro-wave techniques, described the way in which these techniques and studies of the absorption of light by these minerals, have led to an understanding of the origins of the colours of amethyst, citrine, smoky quartz, rose quartz, and related minerals. Officers elected were.— Chairman, Mr N. Heath; secretary, Dr. C. N. Hooker: committee, Dr. R. Bennett and Mr G. A. M. King.
