LONG JOB ENDED

Completion Of Seal

With the completion last month of the sealing of 2.8 miles on the Teddington flat, the Mount Herbert County Council saw the end of efforts made since 1936 to get its main highway sealed from the Sign of the Kiwi to Diamond Harbour.

To mark the end of the job, the council yesterday entertained former councillors, the Commissioner of Works (Mr D. B. Dallas), Mr N. S. Sutherland (representing the council’s consulting engineers), and Mr E. O. Sinclair, the council’s planning adviser. The county chairman (Mr J. H. Mathias) said the sealing -of the 19 miles of road had absorbed almost all the resources of a small county with a limited income. He thanked the National Roads Board, Ministry of Works and others for their help. He estimated that £103,000 had been spent on the road since 1958.
