Will Seek Modification To Cut Reading Costs
When estimates totalling £41,100 for three road reconstruction jobs proposed for next year were received by the Mount Herbert County Council yesterday, it was agreed to see if costs could be reduced by modifying standards.
The consulting engineers (Messrs Royds and Sutherland )said that to reconstruct to 24ft and seal the road from the end of the seal at Diamond Harbour to the Purau bridge would cost
£11,400. including £lOOO for the removal of about 100 trees.
To reconstruct and seal from Purau bridge to the foot of the hill on the Port Levy road would cost £10,200 and to reconstruct and seal Gebbies Pass from Teddington to the Wairewa County boundary would cost £19,500, this including a new box culvert. The Clerk (Mr C. O. Spiller) said he had applied for National Roads Board subsidy of £19,200 for the two Purau jobs, and for £10,500 for reconstruction only on Gebbies Pass. The chairman (Mr J. H. Mathias) said that the engineers’ view was that “as is” sealing would not last more than four or five years. The council agreed to have plans prepared for the two Purau jobs. No Slipways To allow boat slipways to be built at Bakers Point, Charteris Bay, would not enhance the shore-line at an attractive spot, said Cr. R. F. G. Gardiner. On his recommendation the council decided to tell Lyttelton Harbour Board that it did not approve of slips and boat-sheds planned by Messrs G. D. G. Jensen and J. F. Pyne. Cr. Gardiner said that there were alternatives, as slips were for sale in the bay.
Contaminated.—The works committee reported that the Education Board had pointed out that the water-supply to the Port Levy School was contaminated and that it had asked Mr P. R. Blunden, from whose springs the water is taken, to make a check.
Swimming Pool.—lt had been decided to abandon plans to build a swimming pool near the jetty, and to make one at the centre grounds, said a letter from the Governors Bay Community Centre. The council agreed to make water available.
Pollution.—ln reply to the council’s query regarding Lyttelton harbour, the Pollution Advisory Council said that classification defined the water uses to be protected, and if the council had in mind bathing beaches, information would be appreciated. Cr. E. R. Radcliffe was asked to report to the next meeting. Resignation.—Cr. J. A. Howden tendered his resignation, but was asked to hold it over until the December meeting.
