EXTENSIONS TO LIBRARY
£3250 Grant To Shirley B.H.S. A grant of £3250 has been made to the Shirley Boys’ High Schol for extensions and alterations to its library, the monthly meeting of the board of governors was told. The Department of Education said in a letter that the grant was in accordance with the estimate made by the Christchurch Secondary Schools’ Council. Work will start during the summer holidays.
The department also said that a general purposes grant of about £9OO had been allocated to the school. The money, payable from February 1 this year, will be used for administration and maintenance.
The meeting was told that its suggestion, that a system of junior colleges be set up in New Zealand, had been studied by a committee from the University of Canterbury. Because of this, it was decided that a report on the proposal, made by the headmaster (Mr C. V. Gallagher), should be referred to the Christchurch Secondary Schools Principals’ Association.
Mr D. W. Rutherford said that the proposal had re- ' ceived the fullest considera- ' tion from other school boards in Christchurch and had served to stimulate educational thinking. However, some members said, and the headmaster agreed, that had the proposal not been so closely associated with the American system, it might have been better received.
