HALSWELL FIRE
Criticism Of P.O. Dissatisfaction with the lack of alternative communications provided by the Post Office this month when Halswell residents were unable to call the fire brigade because of a cable fault, was expressed by Cr. R. A. Lynch at a meeting of the Halswell County Council. “This to me is unsatisfactory. Either the Post Office is not organised for this kind of situation or its staff didn’t carry out its instruction. I can’t believe we haven’t got an organisation which can handle such a situation,” he said. “I feel they are culpable in this case. They knew the fault existed and employees were apparently repairing it at the time of the fire. They might well have arranged something, such as having a mobile radio van down here. On the motion of Cr. Lynch the council decided to write to the department asking that it advise the council of the telephone communication at the time of the fire.
