Nassella Tussock

Sir, —The report of the North Canterbury Nassella Board’s meeting on October 22 makes very interesting reading. Mr Foley says the time of reckoning is coming. In my opinion it is long overdue. A thorough public investigation of the unnecessary expenditure of public money is needed. For instance, why was it necessary to spend £122 an acre on a property when it could have been ploughed? There are only two nucleus areas mentioned. What about all the areas where thousands of pounds have been spent, mostly unnecessarily? I hope the county councils will make a thorough investigation before they contribute ratepayers’ money. Mr Dingwall said it was important to keep a watch on these areas. Good for Mr Dingwall! I hope this refers to nucleus areas still belonging to the board.—Yours, etc., A. C. HERBERT. Amberley, November 16, 1936.

[Mr F. J. Foley, secretarymanager of the North Canterbury Nassella Tussock Board, replies: “The nucleus area referred to was set down as a test control area, and although the costs of experimentation are rather high on an acreage basis, evidence has been produced that has ensured that areas of heavy infestation can be controlled to the benefit and protection of clean country.”]
