Unusual Bowler
The most successful Victorian bowler in its opening Sheffield Shield match against Western Australia was a 24-year-old newcomer to first-class cricket, R. Bitmead.
Bitmead not only surprised spectators with his success but also with his action. A left-arm spinner, Bitmead bowls off his left foot, an unusual method of delivery for a left-arm bowler.
He was a surprise selection for the Victorian team after being dropped from the State squad, of which he was a member in 1965-66. He has headed his club, Fitzroy’s, bowling averages four times in the last five seasons.
Another Australian with a “wrong foot” action is the St. George (Sydney) and former New South Wales bowler, K. Francis, who bowls right-arm mediumpace deliveries off his right foot.
