Barellan Picked For Avondale Guineas

"The Press" Special Service AUCKLAND.

Whether Barellan is sufficiently good to continue his free galloping right to the finish of a fast tnile will be shown in the Avondale ! Guineas today. The question of Barellan’s stamina is the main one in connexion with the big three- ! year-old race. As far as seven furlongs he has turned in brilliant form. Long an event of the early spring, the Avondale Guineas was put back to November only this year. A consequence of the change is that in future there will be much more likelihood of firmer footing and fav ourable conditions.

Too often in the past the Guineas had to be run in the wet and on very holding ground. Few of the contestants were ready to go a mile In such circumstances. Many did not continue their good form. It is on firm ground that Barellan goes best. When the going is otherwise he looks fairly ordinary. On a soft track he failed in the Great Northern Guineas and was only seventh to finish. Meanwhile he has had five starts tor a second and four firsts. Mr Fagan seems fairly cer tain to keep his position as favourite for the first leg of the TAB double, the Founders' Plate' of £ISOO, 11 furlongs. It will be a thoroughly deserved success if Mr Fagan wins. He has had no luck since he entered open company. The second leg. the Stewards' Handicap, is more open, but Rohe Potae looks a good prospect. If the weather became wet Master Defence would be the hardest to beat. Selections:
