Few Upsets In Tennis Rounds

There were few upsets on the first day of the Canterbury Show Day tennis championships at Wilding Park yesterday.

Only J. Martin (fourth) and B. W. Crofts (fifth), of the eight seeded players, failed to reach the quarterfinals. Martin had to default his third game and the match to B. Keeley, because he was feeling unwell, but Crofts made too many errors against the consistent J. Dickie. The second-seeded Miss J. Bishop lost her singles semifinal to the fourth-seeded Miss R. Legge in straight games, while the third-seeded Miss A. Smith lost her quarterfinal match to the unseeded Miss J. Patterson (Southland). The requirements of examinations greatly reduced the entries in the under-17 sections but the younger grades were better patronised. Only 34 players entered the open grades, 26 mdn and eight women.

The championships will end today. In the following results players are from Canterbury unless otherwise indicated. Results were:—
