Samson, Stevens Head Show Day Batsmen

Canterbury elevens prospered and players in line for the Plunket Shield squad generally performed satisfactorily in Show Day cricket matches against the minor associations at Hagley Oval yesterday.

However, the two highest scores of the day, and the only halfcenturies, were made by batsmen who have not played for Canterbury.

K. J. Samson, opening for M. L. Ryan’s XI, hammered the North Canterbury pace bowlers for 67, and C. J. Stevens, in the middle-order for the same team, scored 69 not out.

D. L. Gallop also batted forcefully, after a quiet start, and meted out some heavy punishment to A. F. Rapley. Ryan, had startling success at the end of the North Canterbury innings when, in 27 balls, he took four wickets for four runs.

Playing B. G. Hadlee’s XI, South Canterbury made a disastrous beginning and was 49 for nine. However, after surviving a chance—to Hadlee— J. Wilson and P. Cosgrove added 51 for the last wicket. C. M. Kirk, the young leftarm spinner, gave further indications of his class.

The wicket was very slow but the perseverance of B. Andrews, A. R. Hounsell (for Canterbury) and C. R. Nicholson earned them each a few wickets, with Nicholson quite the quickest of them in his opening overs. K. Thomson and B. R. Prestidge, each surviving a chance with Hadlee’s XI in a parlous state, hit forcefully to ensure a comfortable win.

Ashburton was rolled up swiftly after lunch by the accuracy of J. M. Mclntyre, who took five wickets for meagre cost. W. J. Thomas, bowling with considerable

pace, had broken through the early part of the innings. B. F. Hastings’s XI batted solidly down the order and won with ease. Four Runs Short

The closest game of all was between a Brabin XI and W. M. Duncan’s XI which ended with Duncan’s team four short of its target, with four wickets in hand. R. W. Anderson and R. L. McHarg played accomplished innings in the face of a thin attack when the Brabin team batted, while the Canterbury XI was given a start of 96 by C. L. Bull and J. R. Center. Scores:—

South Canterbury 100 (J. Wilson 36; B. Andrews 3/18, C. M. Kirk 3/19, A. R. Hounsell 2/22) lost to B. G. Hadlee’s XI 169/9 (K. Thomson 40, B. R. Prestidge 45. G. B. Wain 20; C. R. Nicholson 3/39, L.
