STRUGGLED TO KEEP AHEAD

GVeic Zealand Press Association)

WHANGAREI.

The tenacious Invercargill player, Mrs N. G. Cullen, just managed to ward off the rest of the field when the second qualifying round of the New Zealand women’s golf championship was played at Whangarei yesterday.

Her total of 150 (74, 76) won her the Arthur Duncan Cup as the leading qualifier. Close behind her was Miss U. Wickham, of Tauranga, who returned 151 (77, 74). Bracketed on 152 were Mrs I. H. Bull (Otago) and Miss H. Booth (Poverty Bay). Mrs Cullen had to struggle to hold her one-stroke advantage over Miss Wickham. She dropped two strokes on the first hole, birdied the fourth, fifth and sixth, and then dropped one at the eighth and two on the 138yard ninth.

Coming back, she dropped three strokes in the next two holes, but played the card for the next five, birdied the seventeenth and took a one over at the last

The young Avondale player, Miss C. Sullivan, shot into the reckoning with a magnificent par 72, the best round of the day. She had five birdies. Her net 69 won for Miss Sullivan the L.G.U. Challenge Bowl.
