DUNK 9 AHEAD

11 Birdies, I Eagle

(N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) SYDNEY.

E. A. Dunk stormed to a nine-stroke lead at the halfway mark in the Australian professional golf championship at Royal Sydney yesterday. Dunk mastered rain and strong winds to card a three-under-par 69, for a 36-hole total of 135. With 11 birdies and one eagle in two rounds, he seems set to capture his second national P.G.A. title. Nine shots behind Dunk, in second place, are P. W. Thomson (70, 74), C. Johnstone (71, 73), J. Sullivan (70, 74) and a 21-year-old newcomer, W. Podmore (73, 71). Podmore, who has yet to win any prize money as a professional, lost a great chance to peg back the leader when he dropped shots at each of the last three holes of his round.

The New Zealander, B. T. Boys, who was among the leaders with 71 on Thursday, failed in yesterday’s testing conditions when he returned 80. W. G. Godfrey, of Auckland, survived the cut-off by one stroke. He had 76 yesterday for a total of 155.
