General News

Self-Reliant

A five-year-old boy, Robert Byron Tapara, wandered away from his parents during the middle of the afternoon at the Royal Show in Christchurch yesterday. For three hours his parents, aided by the police, searched the Addington Show Grounds for him. At 7 p.m., they received word that Robin was at his home in Mackworth street, Woolston, having arrived there about 6.30 p.m. He said he had walked home.

Too Heavy

A heavy truck with a full load of rock for the Westport harbour improvement job sank into the road in Mill street, Westport, where it was parked while the driver was at lunch yesterday. The truck was found at a precarious angle. It was eventually jacked back to solid ground. The truck is owned by the contractor for the harbour job, the Wilkins and Davies Construction Company, Ltd. —(F.0.0.R.)

Mild Day

The weather in Christchurch yesterday was mainly cloudy and mild. The maximum temperature at Harewood was 60 degrees at 1.30 p.m. A light to moderate north-easterly blew for most of the day. Temperatures at Harewood were 43 degrees at 6 a.m., 52 degrees at 9 a.m., and 58 degrees at midday and 3 p.m.

Interest In Map

A map on which the pastoral runs of the South Island are marked aroused unexpected interest in the Lincoln College tent at the Royal Show. Trampers, shooters, shearers, former musterers, and runholders pored over it and were ready to buy copies in surprising numbers. The map recently produced by the Tussock Grasslands and Mountain Lands Institute, is in two forms. In three sections one is about 6ft high, is gridded and has an index. The other, less elaborate form consists of two sheets and has no grid.
