“SECURITY FOR ALL”

—H. J. Walker (National) 1 firmly believe the National Government will be returned. The last six years have been marked by progressive legislation, buoyant economic conditions, good opportunities for our young people, full employment and security for all. New Zealand is enjoying unprecedented prosperity. Our export earnings are at a record level. Industry, land and forestry are developing as never before, more houses

are being built, more accommodation provided for the aged, people are saving more, the cost of living is more stable. All this is a direct result of prudent management by the National Government.

National legislation to make self-ownership flats possible; two new Post Offices in the planning or building stage, and a third extended, together with a ready supply of telephones, television, new classrooms, sub-divisions —all this is giving a new and prosperous look to St. Albans. New legislation has been passed to give heavier penalties for crimes of violence, especially against women and children. For the first time, wives have been given an effective share in the family

home. Means have been provided to stamp out illicit trading in narcotics. “Firm in Defence”

In the field of external affairs, I, as a returned serviceman, and my colleagues in the National Government will honour our international treaty obligations and agreements. We will stand firm in defence of independence in South Vietnam, against Communist aggression. We will not welsh on our allies. We deeply regret that the left wing element of the Federation of Labour forced the Parliamentary Labour Party to capitulate. During the last six years in which I have been privileged to represent our district in Parliament, my aim has always been to maintain the closest contact with all residents, so that they may have the best representation possible. As a working man, with a teenaged family, I share so many of your problems, and after 21 years of residence in St Albans know the district, the people, their hopes and aspirations. It has been a privilege to be “always at your service” and I look forward with confidence to the privilege of continuing as your representative in Parliament for the next three years.
