£59,667 For Medical Research

(N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, Nov. 3. Sixteen grants amounting to £59,667 —approved at the October meeting of the Golden Kiwi Lottery Committee for the Promotion of Medical Research—were announced today by the committee’s chairman, Sir Edward Sayers. Three medical research grants were for doctors investigations into cancer or leukaemia.

Received through the Cancer Society of New Zealand, the grants went to Dr. F. W. Gunz (Christchurch) £12,800 over two years for leukaemia research, Dr. B. F. Cain (Auckland), £8392 over two years for research into cancer chemotherapy and Dr. R. G. Stephens (Hamilton) £2OOO for research on leukaemia in the Waikato.

Other grants approved were for Professor J. L. Wright (department of obstetrics and gynaecology, Otago Medical School), £2691 for equipment for obstetrics research; and Professor F. N. Pastier (department of pharmacology, Otago Medical School), £lO,OOO for pharmacological research. The medical unit at Auckland Hospital, £2267 for one year for

lipid research; the post-gradu-ate school of obstetrics and gynaecology, National Women'sHospital, Auckland, £4845 for equipment and animals for endocrine research; Dr. T. V. O’Donnell (department of medicine, Otago Medical School) £l3OO for equipment for research on respiratory physiology; Dr. K. A. K. North (Wellington Hospital) £2257 for equipment for research on calcium metabolism; Dr. E. R. Nye (department of medicine, Otago Medical School), £3075 for equipment for research into lipid metabolism; Dr. R. O. H. Irvine (department of medicine, Otago Medical School), £lOOO for equipment for renal research; Dr. J. T. Murray and Dr. E. E. Hannah (Christchurch Hospital), £755 for one year for an epidemiological study; Dr. G. M. Crowley and Dr. M. G. Smith (department of biochemistry, Otago Medical School), £5700 for equipment for biochemical research; Dr. P. E. Holst (department of medicine, Otago Medical School), £2035 for one year for research on patients with acute respiratory failure; Dr. D. E. PoswlUo (plastic surgical unit, Burwood Hospital), £5O for equipment for research on cleft palate; £5OO towards the cost of publishing papers presented at an international psychology conference to Dunedin.
