OLD AND BOLD IS ELLERSLIE HOPE

AUCKLAND.

Old and Bold (8-10) and Lu Filou (8-13) are certain to be prominent in the £2500 Alison Cup, the first leg of the T.A.B. double at the Auckland Racing Club’s mid-spring meeting at Ellerslie today.

Old and Bold was successful at Ellerslie at his last start. Lu Filou has not won this term, but looks at his best Victory for Old and Bold would be very popular. He is owned by an Auckland Racing Club committeeman, Sir Woolf Fisher, and is prepared on the course by R. L. Collett Old and Bold, at his last start, scored handsomely in the Spring Handicap, 11 furlongs, on October 15. Meanwhile his fast work at Ellerslie has been first-class. Lu Filou is a six-year-old gelding from W. Sander’s stable at Te Awamutu and a grand stayer at his peak. Judged by his sixth in the City Handicap at Tauranga last week and a solid mile in training on Thursday, he is very fit.

Barellan, a stablemat* of Lu Filou, is certain to be backed to short odds in the second leg of the T.A.B. double, the Cheltenham Handicap, six furlongs. On his brilliant gallop at Tauranga last week it is hard to select anything to beat him. Barellan's main rivals may be Silver Sunset, Arbroath, Admiral Donnington and Big Dipper. Silver Sunset has worked boldly at Takaninl for the last two weeks. She might not be able to match Barellan’s early speed, but is very game and a most determined finisher. Arbroath, a half brother of the Melbourne Cup winner, Galilee, by Chatsworth 11, was successful over six furlongs at his first start three weeks ago after a spell. He led all the way. The weather has been fine and the track should be fast. Selections:— Noon. Melrose Handicap: First Division—Macsfield, The Carpet Bagger.
