Abduction Of Boy Alleged
(N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND, Nov. 4. An 18-year-old girl was convicted today on a charge of receiving a child, knowing it have been unlawfully taken from the custody of its mother.
Mr W. J. Meade, S.M., granted the girl suppression of name on the application of Mr A. J. Nixon. A charge of obstructing a policeman was withdrawn.
She was remanded until November 11 for sentence. Mr Nixon said the girl had been misled by her sympathy for another person, and she now realised how foolish she had been. Sergeant R. M. Huggard said the child was unlawfully taken from his school on October 26 and given to the girl to look after. The girl was aware of a previous custody order made by the Court to the child’s mother. On October 27, police called
at a motor-camp, where the girl was located with the child. She had in no way
harmed the child. Ernest Wray Salter, aged 24, a driver, elected jury trial on a charge involving the alleged abduction of his five-year-old son and a further charge of threatening to do grievous bodily harm to the child. For Salter, Mr K. Ryan said he would not ask for bail for his client. Salter was remanded to November 11 for a date to be set for depositions to be taken.
