He was Stewart Waters, aged 20, a workman, of Beach road, Papakura. Police say he failed to negotiate a bend. He died of head injuries. Up to 4.30 p.m. today, 470 traffic deaths this year had been reported to the Transport Department—lo behind last year’s total at this time. The toll this month is six, compared with three at the same time last November.

Boy Drowned A 19-month-old boy was drowned in a horse trough at Horsham downs, near Hamilton last night. He was Darrin John Christini. He was playing with some young animals in a cattle race. He wandered and was found by his mother in a horse trough about 6 p.m. A doctor was called and mouth-to-mouth resuscitation applied for almost an hour. Pinned By Tractor A farmer who was in danger of drowning while pinned for two hours under an overturned tractor yesterday up to his neck in mud and water, was reported to be comfortable in Masterton Hospital today. He is Maxwell Galbraith, aged 42, of Kaituna, who suffered a fractured pelvis in the accident.

Using a front-end loader, Mr C. Nicholls managed to lift the tractor off the injured man. Police today praised Mr Nicholls’s skill and determination in getting his machine across muddy paddocks to free Mr Galbraith.
