Penny-Pile Profit
(New Zealand Press Association)
WELLINGTON, Nov. 4.
Penny piles in pubs are the latest targets in the search for a solution to New Zealand’s pressing penny shortage.
A penny-pile scout from the National Bank of New Zealand spotted one in the Pier Hotel, Wellington, this week.
Wellington College Old Boys, owners of the “copper castle,” agreed to sell.
particularly as the bank offered a donation as a premium for the pile. Today six bank employees counted out 10.800 pennies into bags and handed over 45 £1 notes and the donation. “We’ve got our eyes on a couple of other heaps around the country,” a bank official said later. “There’s hundreds of millions of pennies in this country—somewhere.”
