SOUTHBRIDGE EXCHANGE
Change To Automatic A new automatic telephone exchange serving 320 subscribers in the Southbridge area would come into service on November 18, the regional engineer for the Post Office (Mr H. W. Wilkinson) said this week. The Minister of Transport (Mr McAlpine) would officially open the £46,000 exchange, which was the first of a series planned to make automatic the exchanges in the Lincoln and Leeston areas.
The Eyrewell exchange would become automatic in 1968 and this would be followed by Leeston, Springston, Rolleston and Lincoln, all of which were still in the planning stage. At Willowby, south-west of Ashburton, a new automatic exchange costing £56,000 would be opened in the second half of 1967. It would serve 195 subscribers now on party lines connected to the Ashburton and Hinds exchanges.
