Concern Over Tribunal
(N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, November 3. The Inter-Church Council on Public Affairs has asked churches to consider making submissions to the Government about membership of the Indecent Publications tribunal, according to a report received by the Presbyterian General Assembly last night. The public questions com-
mittee reported to the Assembly that the Inter-Church Council on Public Affairs wants submissions to be made about the possibility of withholding from newpapers all except the names of publications and the simple questions. The committee did not feel ready to take action but has the matter under consideration. Attempts to introduce narcotics to New Zealand were persistent and should be met by strong legislation, although measures involving curtailment of civil liberties must be scrutinised carefully, the committee said. Professor I. Breward, pro-
fessor of Church history at Knox College, told the Assembly he considered that the committee had not said enough about the “steady erosion of individual liberty” in New Zealand. The committee said the community must be prepared to spend more money on mental hospital buildings and for therapeutic activities. The ratio of staff to mental patients must be increased.
