GUARDS GREET STUDENTS

(N.Z.P.A.- Reuter—Copyright)

PEKING, November 3. More than 10,000 Red Guards beat drums and cymbals and chanted anti-Russian slogans in a heroes’ welcome to 65 Chinese students sent home by the Russian authorities.

The trans-Siberian express rolled into the vast modern Peking railway station with a big portrait of the party chairman, Mao Tse-tung, on the front of its diesel engine. The young Red Guards thronging the station waved red plastic-covered booklets of quotations from Mao Tsetung. During the ceremonies they solemnly read out quotations in unison. The students were formally welcomed by Tua Lo-fu, ViceMinister of Higher Education.

Speakers attacked the Soviet Union for its “unjustified expulsion” of the students. The students were given Red Guard armbands. Mr Mao today attended another mass rally of Red Guards, revolutionary students and teachers in Peking for the returning students. The Defence Minister (Lin Piao) addressed the huge gathering in Tienanmen square. This was Mr Mao’s fifth appearance at a Red Guard rally since the August 18 meeting which launched the militant youth movement. As in previous meetings, Lin Pao said he was speaking on behalf of Mao Tsetung.

He called for continued efforts to win greater victories and more successes in the “cultural revolution.” Lin Pao spoke soon after Mao, again in mililary uniform, had mounted the rostrum to thunderous cheers and to his signature tune, “The East is Red.”
