PRINCIPAL AT NAENAE

Bumside H.S. Master Mr D. E. Wood, head of social studies at the Burnside High School for the last five years, has been appointed principal of Naenae College. Wellington, where he will succeed Mr I. H. Johnston in February. Mr Wood is widely known for his work in social studies, his two books ("The Modern World" and “Beyond School"), and his efforts to bring the subject once known as "civics" back into teaching. Educated at the Ashburton High School, where he was a member of the first XV and first VI, Mr Wood completed his master of arts degree at the University of Canterbury at the age of 20. and trained at the Auckland Teachers' College. Mr Wood was an official of the West Coast Cricket Association while teaching there, has been a member of the Canterbury Boys' Cricket Association, coached a variety of sports, and was a senior Rugby referee. He is keen on debating and drama. An active member of the Presbyterian Church, Mr Wood has been a driving force in the scheme by whk-h Bible Class members have given voluntary service in the islands during their holidays. This scheme was started before olunteer Service Abroad.
