COMALCO PLANS

Talks With Cabinet (N Z. Press Association) INVERCARGILL, Nov. 2. Senior executives of the Australian aluminium combine, Comalco, will meet the Cabinet Works Committee on Friday, the Prime Minister (Mr Holyoake) confirmed at an election meeting in Invercargill tonight The talks could extend over the week-end.

Comalco is the organisation which has an option on power from Manapouri to operate an aluminium smelter near the the port of Bluff. Mr Holyoake was asked whether the Government was sure Comalco would come to New Zealand. “Up to date, yes,” he said. “There is no questions about it They have' until 1968 to finally decide, but there is nowhere else in the world where they could get electricity at the price they will get it from Manapouri.”

Mr Holyoake said that whether or not the aluminium industry came to Southland, the Manapouri scheme would give the country vitally needed power at a low cost

Replacement.—Mr J. H. MacDonald, a 40-year-old electrical fitter, of Blenheim, will contest Southern Maori for Social Credit. He has replaced Mr R. Kopu, of Inglewood. —(P.A.).
