Shortage Of Waggons

There was a shortage of railway waggons, particularly bogies at Lyttelton on Monday. An Australian freighter, the Iron Duke, has been affected by the shortage more than others and road transport has been used for several days to take its steel rails and other heavy cargo to Christchurch. According to the stationmaster at Lyttelton, Mr B. H. Patterson, the shortage of bogies during the last week has been mainly brought about by the influx of heavy cargo requiring this kind of transport. The Iron Duke which arrived at Lyttelton from Newcastle on Sunday, October 23, had 2800 tons of New South Wales steel for local discharge. She sailed for Wellington last evening.
