Railway Apprentices Seek Wage Rise

A lunch-hour meeting of 150 railway apprentices on Monday decided to press for the general wage order increase for all apprentices. The apprentices also decided to press for a 50 per cent margin for skill on the completion of time. They endorsed proposals for tradesmen’s rates of pay for the last 2000 hours of apprenticeship; for time attending night classes to be counted as time worked; for all protective clothing necessary to be supplied free by the employer: when overtime was worked, for it to be available to all apprentices; and for an adequate boarding allowance or hostel Accommodation for out-of-town apprentices. The conveners of the meeting wbre Messrs K. J. Burrows and D. R. Kennewell, both apprentices.

They said afterwards that the proposals would be put to the national officers of the Amalgamated Society of Railway Servants and the Railway Tradesmen’s Association. These officers would be asked to begin early negotiations with the Government on the proposals.
