Norway’s Glaciers May Disappear In 100 Years
(N.Z.P.A.-Reuter) OSLO. If the Norwegian glaciers continue to melt at the same rate as in the last 30 years, they will all disappear in the course of the next 100 years, according to a glaciologist of the Norwegian Polar Institute. The Natthorst Glacier on Spitsbergen has receded over
100 yards this year, and most of the Norwegian glaciers are receding about 20 yards each year.
Melting of the glaciers has increased in intensity in the last few years. In some places, they have receded about one to one and a half miles in the last 30 years, while at the foot of the Jostedal Glacier, the largest in Norway, there has been a vertical melting of over 100 yards in the same period.
