1250 At Congress On Evangelism

Mr J. E. Davies, secretary of the Canterbury Evangelical Alliance, says 1250 representatives from more than 100 nations have gathered for the World Congress on Evangelism now in progress in Berlin. “One race, one gospel, one task” is the congress theme for Bible studies, world reports on evangelism, small discussion groups, major addresses, films, and a special drama featuring world youth. Writing from Berlin, Mr Davies said Emperor Haile Selassie, of Ethiopia, would fly to Berlin to address the congress, after concluding his four-nation tour of the Middle East. Dr Billy Graham, honorary chairman of the congress, had

expressed the hope that “historians will write of this time —if Christ delays His coming—that the World Congress on Evangelism was used of God to advance the church and that in this meeting the mighty God revealed to us His old power in new dimensions,” said Mr Davies. Bishop Alexander Mar Theophilus of Adoor, Kerala, India, would officially represent the Mar Thoma Syrian Church at the congress. Many observers believe the Mar Thoma Church is probably the oldest existing evangelical Christian church today. It claims the Apostle Thomas as the probable founder. “Christianity Today,” a fortnightly theological journal in Washington, is sponsor of the congress. Dr. Carl F. H. Henry, editor of the publication, is congress chairman.
