Islanders Reservoir Of Tb Infection

(New Zealand Press Association) ROTORUA, November 1. Pacific Islanders are acting as a reservoir of tuberculosis infection in New Zealand, according to ophthalmologists.

The reason is because the Islanders have not undergone mass miniature chest X-ray-ing.

The observations were made yesterday at the second joint conference of the Australian and New Zealand Ophthalmological Societies, being held in Rotorua, during discussion on a paper presented by Dr. J. B. Hamilton, of Tasmania.

Dr. Hamilton spoke on the decline of tubercular eye disease in Tasmania. Mass radiography had greatly reduced the amount of tuberculosis in Tasmania.

A spokesman for the conference said it w’as pointed out that Tasmania’s figures were better than New Zealand’s because a large num-

ber of immigrants, particularly Pacific Islanders, were arriving in New Zealand with tuberculosis.
