PICTURES OF MOON

Small Areas Shown (N.Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyrig.it) MOSCOW, Nov. 1. Pictures of the moon taken by Russia’s orbiting Luna XII show features on the barren lunar surface less than 10 yards across, “Izvestia” said tonight. The Soviet Government newspaper said photographs taken by the satellite picked out objects on the landscape hundreds of times smaller than can be observed through earth-bound telescopes. Astronomers can see craters about half a mile wide through their best telescopes. Luna XII, which sweeps within 60 miles over the moon’s Sea of Rains every three hours and 25 minutes, went into its near-equatorial orbit last night. At the high-point of its circle it swings out to 1080 miles above the moon’s surface.
