Vitality Feature Of The Group Show

Exhibits at the Group Show, which opened at the Durham street Art Gallery on Saturday evening, were honest, sincere and full of vitality and, in the opinion of many, worthy of overseas attention.

A large crowd attended the informal opening. Prices of the 120 exhibits ranged from 4gns to 120gns. Of particular interest was part of a mural being commissioned by the N.Z.B.C. for the foyer of its Rotorua building. The mural is being done by two Christchurch artists, a sculptor, Mrs Ria Bancroft, and a wood carver, Mr P. M. Mulcahy. Ecclesiastical altar furniture the work of Yvonne Rust, of Christchurch, also attracted much attention. It included a mural, chandelier, candle sticks and snuffer, pulpit lamp, wine and water bottles and tray as well as an alms bowl. Priced at 90gns, it was

sold early in the evening. The first Frances Hodgkins fellow, at the University of Otago, Michael Illingworth, displayed two paintings, “The Painter and the Poet” cost 90gns and “Painting with Rainbow 9” was priced at 70gns. Other artists, both members and guests, whose works will be on display until November 13, are: Janet Poulton, M. Warr, Leo Bensemann, G. F. Fuller, Olivia Spencer Bower, Juliet Petei, Doris Lusk, Rita Angus, Chrystabel Aitken, Paul Pascoe and Linton, Warren and Mahoney, John Drawbridge, Quentin Macfarlane, E. N. Bracy, G. T. Moffitt, Colin McCahon, Pat Hanly, M. Kitson, R. Gopas, Irene O’Neill, W. A. Sutton, Alfreds Simmonds, Don Peebles, Warren Tippett, Helen Mason, Doris Holland, Norman Lemon, Ida Lough, Use Von Randov and Tim Angus.
