SPORTING IMP
rpHE Sunbeam Imp Sports has been added to the Rootes Group range of 875 c.c. Imp models. The engine of the new model produces 55 b.h.p., compared with 42 b.h.p. for the normal Imp models, and 0 to 60 m.p.h. acceleration is claimed to be less than 18 seconds, with 0 to 70 m.p.h. acceleration at 24 seconds. The top speed is about 90 m.p.h. and fuel consumption is about 40 m.p.g. The main engine change is a redesigned cylinder head with a high-lift camshaft larger ports and valves and new timings. Twin carburettors are fitted, as is an oil cooler.
The interior has been improved, and the front seats have fully-adjustable backrests. The brakes are servo-as-sisted and the suspension has been modified to match the higher performance. The allsynchromesh gearbox and diaphragm clutch are the same as in the normal Imp. The dash is padded and the instruments include gauges for water temperature, oil pressure, and amps. A heater is standard equipment, as are windscreen washers and a headlight flasher. Generous sound insulation has been used.
